דור המלחמה: אלף ימים לאחר ה-7 באוקטובר

אלף ימים לאחר ה-7 באוקטובר 2023 – היום ששינה את המזרח התיכון ושלח גלי זעזוע לעולם כולו – מתהווה לנגד עינינו סיפורו של דור מלחמה.

בישראל, רבות ורבים מבני דור זה, ובייחוד צעירות וצעירים בגילאי 18–35, נלחמים ונלחמו במלחמה הארוכה ביותר בתולדות המדינה. אחרים חווים אובדן, אבל וחרדה גם ללא השתתפות ישירה בלחימה. כל זאת מתרחש בשלב חיים שבו צעירים וצעירות מעצבים את מסלול חייהם האישי, הכלכלי, האקדמי והחברתי, ועל רקע משבר בדמוקרטיה הישראלית ושינויים טכנולוגיים, פוליטיים וכלכליים גלובליים מרחיקי לכת.

אירועי ה־7 באוקטובר והמלחמה שפרצה בעקבותיהם עשויים להוות רגע מכונן בעיצובו של דור זה.

מאז המתקפה על יישובי עוטף עזה, המזרח התיכון חווה הסלמה חסרת תקדים באלימות ובחוסר יציבות, שלה השלכות החורגות הרבה מעבר לאזור. צעירים וצעירות פלסטינים במזרח התיכון ובאירופה נחשפים להרס ולאובדן ברצועת עזה ולהשפעות המלחמה על קהילות פלסטיניות בגדה המערבית, בעוד צעירים באירופה, מימין ומשמאל, בוחנים מחדש שאלות של מוסר, זיכרון פוליטי ואחריות היסטורית. כל זאת מתרחש לצד התחזקות פופוליזם ימני ועלייה באנטישמיות ברחבי העולם. במקביל, דור הצעירים של היום מתמודד עם מהפכת הבינה המלאכותית והשפעותיה על תרבות, פוליטיקה, כלכלה, שוק העבודה ודפוסי יצירה וצריכת מדיה. מכלול ההתפתחויות הללו צפוי לעצב בשנים הקרובות את המציאות החברתית והפוליטית בישראל, במזרח התיכון, באירופה ומעבר להם.

פרויקט דור המלחמה – אלף ימים לאחר ה-7 באוקטובר מבקש לעצור ולשאול מה פירוש הדבר להיות צעיר או צעירה בישראל ובגרמניה של השנים האחרונות. זהו דור שנכנס לבגרות בצל מגפה עולמית, אי-ודאות כלכלית וחברתית, מלחמה, אלימות וקיטוב פוליטי. הפרויקט יבחן את השפה, המחקר, המוזיקה והתרבות שבאמצעותם דור זה מספר לעצמו ולעולם את סיפורו, ויפתח מרחב לחשיבה על מה שאבד, על מה שהשתנה, על המשותף לבנות ובני הדור הזה מעבר לתהומות של לאום, שפה, מגדר ודת – ועל האפשרות, בכל זאת, לדמיין אופק אחר.

במסגרת הפרויקט, ביוזמת קרן היינריך בל בתל אביב, ייערכו ב־2.7.2026 שני אירועים מרכזיים: כנס אקדמי-מחקרי, בהובלה ותכנון משותפים עם התכנית ללימודי צעירות בבית הספר לממשל וחברה באקדמית תל אביב יפו, ואירוע ערב בבית רדיקל בתל אביב.

בכנס הבוקר במכללה האקדמית תל אביב-יפו יידונו היווצרותו של "דור מלחמה" בישראל ובגרמניה, השירות הצבאי כחוויה מעצבת, מציאות חייהם של צעירים וצעירות ערבים בישראל בזמן מלחמה, והאופן שבו סטודנטים וסטודנטיות מפרשים את התקופה ואת עמדתם הדורית. בין המשתתפים: פרופ' אילת הראל, ד"ר חוסאם אבו בכר, פרופ' נועה לביא, שני בירנבוים, וכן שטפן וופל מקרן ברטלסמן, בשיחה עם ד"ר עפר ולדמן, ראש קרן היינריך בל בתל אביב.

אירוע הערב בבית רדיקל יעסוק בדור המלחמה מנקודות מבט פוליטיות, חברתיות, תרבותיות ותקשורתיות. ישתתפו בו בין היתר שיר ראובן, איברהים אבו אחמד, רועי לוטם וטליה דנציג. הפודקאסטר הגרמני טילו יונג יתארח לשיחה עם דניאל גרין מ"מתחת לרדאר", והערב ייחתם במופעים של טליה דנציג ושל רוח באה מדרום.

את הפרויקט תלווה האמנית והיוצרת נוגה פרידמן, יוצרת רב-תחומית וחוקרת מגדר, מחברת הספרים ימים כקלקולם ו-גוף ראשון רבים, יוצרת הסרט שום דבר לא בסדר ומוזיקאית. פרידמן, אלמנתו של רנ"ג עידו רוזנטל שנהרג בקרב ליד עלומים ב־7.10.2023 ואם לשלושה, תיצור במהלך האירועים סדרת רישומים וטקסטים קצרים שיהוו תיעוד ופרשנות אמנותית לשיח שיתקיים על הבמה ומעבר לה.

The War Generation: 1000 Days after October 7^th

One thousand days after October 7, 2023 — the day that changed the Middle East and sent shockwaves across the world — the story of a war generation is taking shape before our eyes.

In Israel, many members of this generation, especially young adults between the ages of 18 and 35, are fighting or have fought in the longest war in the country’s history. Others are experiencing loss, grief, and fear without direct participation in the fighting. All of this is taking place at a life stage where young people are shaping their personal, economic, academic, and social futures, against the backdrop of a crisis in Israeli democracy and far-reaching global technological, political, and economic transformations.

The events of October 7^th and the war that broke out in their wake may constitute a formative moment in the shaping of this generation.

Since the attack on the communities surrounding the Gaza Strip, the Middle East has experienced an unprecedented escalation of violence and instability, with consequences extending far beyond the region itself. Young Palestinians in the Middle East and Europe are confronted with the destruction and scale of loss in Gaza and the effects of the war on Palestinian communities in the West Bank, while young people in Europe, on both the right and the left, are re-examining questions of morality, political memory, and historical responsibility. These developments are unfolding alongside the global rise of right-wing populism and a sharp increase in antisemitism directed at Jewish communities around the world.

At the same time, today’s younger generation is confronting the AI revolution and its impact on culture, politics, the economy, the labor market, and patterns of media creation and consumption. Taken together, these developments are likely to shape social and political realities in Israel, the Middle East, Europe, and beyond, in the years ahead.

The project The War Generation — 1000 Days after October 7^th seeks to pause and ask what it means to be a young adult in Israel and in Germany today. This is a generation that has entered adulthood in the shadow of a global pandemic, economic and social uncertainty, war, violence, and political polarization. Through research, language, music, and culture, the project will explore how this generation tells its story to itself and to the world. It will open a space for reflection on what has been lost, what has changed, what members of this generation share across divides of nationality, language, gender, and religion, and on the possibility, nevertheless, of imagining a different horizon.

Initiated by the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Tel Aviv, the project will culminate on July 2, 2026, in two central events: an academic conference, jointly developed with the Young Adults Studies Program at the School of Government and Society at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo, and an evening event at Radical House in Tel Aviv.

The morning conference at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo will address the emergence of a “war generation” in Israel and Germany, military service as a formative experience, the realities facing young Arab women and men in Israel during wartime, and the ways in which students interpret this period and their own generational position. Participants include Prof. Ayelet Harel, Dr. Hussam Abu Bakr, Prof. Noa Lavie, and Shani Birnboim, as well as Mr. Stephan Vopel of the Bertelsmann Stiftung in conversation with Dr. Ofer Waldman, Head of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Tel Aviv.

The evening event at Radical House will explore the war generation from political, social, cultural, and media perspectives. Participants will include Shir Reuven, Ibrahim Abu Ahmad, Roy Lotem, and Talia Danzig. German podcaster Tilo Jung will join Daniel Green of “Under the Radar” for a conversation, and the evening will conclude with performances by Talia Danzig and the band Ruach Ba’a MiDarom (“A Wind Comes from the South”).

The project will be accompanied by Noga Friedman, a multidisciplinary artist and gender researcher, author of the books Days as They Are and First Person Plural, creator of the film Nothing Is Wrong, and a musician. Friedman, the widow of Chief Warrant Officer Ido Rosenthal, who was killed in battle near Alumim on October 7, 2023, and the mother of three, will create a series of drawings and short texts during the events, providing both documentation and artistic interpretation of the conversations taking place on and beyond the stage.
