In accordance with the commitment of the Heinrich Boell Foundation to promote a discourse on masculinity in the context of equality, we looked for an additional space where we could give expression to the topic. We turned to the Museum on the Seam – Socio-Political Contemporary Art Museum, and in a unique collaboration we created “Alpha”, an exhibition presenting a wide range of views on Israeli masculinity, which express the changing discourse on the topic, in order to reexamine and challenge the conventions of our lives, and generate an open and free discussion of gender equality.
It appears that ‘Man’, renowned and acclaimed, is a category within itself, consisting of natural timeless characteristics. Perceiving Man as ‘The First Sex’ determines the norms and standards by which humanity is defined. In recent years, there is an increasing preoccupation with the concept of masculinity and the ongoing changes influenced by social processes, evolutions in feminist field, and the struggle for gender equality. This places the dominant male ethos into a process of dismantlement and reassembling, thus affecting the ideals and stereotypes structuring its hegemonic position in society and culture today.
The exhibition seeks to observe contemporary representations of masculinity as it intersects with other aspects – ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, sexual – of personal and collective identity, while tracing different rituals, models, and patterns of masculinity, especially in its local contexts. Through the unique works of artists from the last two decades, simultaneously touching on masculine myths as well as everyday reality, the exhibition spans a range of intriguing views – parodic, melancholic, intimate, critical – presenting masculinity in its multitude of manifestations, full of contradictions and complexity.

בהמשך למחויבות של קרן היינריך בל לקדם שיח על גבריות בהקשר של שוויון, תרנו אחר מרחב נוסף בו נוכל לתת ביטוי לנושא. פנינו למוזיאון על התפר – מוזיאון חברתי לאומנות עכשווית, ובשיתוף פעולה ייחודי יצרנו את "אלפא", תערוכה הפורסת מנעד רחב של מבטים על גבריות ישראלית, אשר מבטאים את השיח המשתנה בנושא, על מנת לבחון מחדש ולערער על המוסכמות של חיינו, במטרה לייצר דיון פתוח וחופשי על שוויון מגדרי.
נדמה ש״גבר״ היא קטגוריה מובנת מאליה, ידועה ומנוסחת, בעלת מאפיינים טבעיים ועל-זמניים; הוא ״המין הראשון״, הנורמה, הסטנדרט אשר ביחס אליו מוגדר שאר המגוון האנושי. בשנים האחרונות, ניכר עיסוק הולך וגובר במושג הגבריות ובתמורות שחלות בו, בהשפעתם של תהליכים חברתיים, התפתחויות בשדה הפמיניסטי ומאבקים לשוויון מגדרי. אלה מעמידים את האתוס הגברי הדומיננטי תחת פירוק והרכבה מחודשת, כמו גם את האידיאלים והסטריאוטיפים המבנים אותו ואת מעמדו ההגמוני בחברה ובתרבות.
התערוכה מבקשת להתבונן בייצוגים עכשוויים של גבריות והצטלבויותיה עם רבדים אחרים – מעמדיים, אתניים, דתיים, מיניים – של זהות אישית וקולקטיבית, תוך התחקות אחר ריטואלים, מודלים ודפוסים שונים של גבריות, במיוחד בהקשריה המקומיים. באמצעות יצירות של אמניות ואמנים משני העשורים האחרונים, הנוגעות בו-זמנית במיתוסים ובמציאות היומיומית של גברים, התערוכה פורשת מנעד של מבטים – פארודיים, מלנכוליים, אינטימיים, ביקורתיים – אשר מציגים גבריות על שלל מופעיה, רוויי הסתירות והמורכבות.
